FACEBOOK ADDICTION (QUALITATIVE)
I sat down individually with my four peers in order to gain more information about the addiction of the facebook.com. I asked a series of questions based around why the person goes on facebook. For example I asked about what interactive tools that they use when on the facebook. The results were very interesting.
Female A was the one who used facebook the most frequently. I asked her why she used the facebook.com. She replied ”I use facebook for many different reasons, like to meet guys. If there is a hot guy in my class then I will look him up on facebook to get more information about him, like where he’s from and stuff. That way we will have something to talk about in class the next day”.
I then asked her what her favorite part of the facebook was. She replied “The pictures, Oh My God they are so great. You can create your own photo albums and then tag pictures of your friends so that they will show up on their pages too. Also I love looking at pictures of people and their friends even if I don’t know them that well, it gives me insight to like, who they are and who they spend their time with”.
The interview went on and on and she replied with assumed answers to the questions I was asking. I then asked, “When you are near a computer do you usually sign on facebook even if there is no reason to?” She responded with “Of course, I always have to try and stop myself from signing on but I never can. It s so exciting to see if you got a new friend request or if some hot guy sent you a message or something. I can honestly tell you I am totally addicted and log on facebook every chance I get”.
Female B had much of the same answers to my questions and Female A did, she too claimed that she was legitimately addicted to the facebook.com. Male C and D had very interesting answers to my questions. They both laughed at me when I asked if they thought there was such thing as addiction to a website. I then asked them both why they use the facebook. Male C answered, “Oh I look at a lot of pictures on the facebook, mad girls have pictures of themselves looking scandalous and shit, it’s mad cool”. Male D gave me a more educated answer, “ I use facebook because I’m not ashamed to be a part of societies popular culture. I look at pictures, send e mails and browse through different pages”.
In conclusion, women and men use the facebook for many different reasons as well as many similar ones. Facebook has become an addiction for some and the rest claim to be untouched by it.
