In order to sign up for these sites the only requirement is some form of e-mail address. There is an initial personal profile that you must fill out in order to interact with others on these sites. As your account grows more and more people begin to "add" you as a friend. There are other options that facebook.com and myspace.com give you. For instance, you can send personal messages to your friends or perspective friends. This helps the people who use it grow a social network online.
